About Us

The American Mustang Foundation (aka Legacy Ranch) is a California 501(c)3 non--profit corporation with the overall mission to educate the public about the history and plight of the American Mustang to improve the lives of mustangs both on the range and in captivity. The AMF is committed to bringing awareness to the issues creating this predicament and providing tools that you can use to help make a difference. We will accomplish this by educating the public about the history of the wild horse and it's significance on the settlement of the West.

Through education at the community level and via the world-wide web, we can help to ensure the survival and welfare of wild horses and burros as viable, free-roaming herds in an ecologically-balanced environment and effect change in public policy to improve management of herds and resources to keep wild horses and burros on the range instead of captivity. For those wild horses in captivity, we will improve their adoptability by gentling and training them. It is our goal to create a blueprint that can be replicated in other communities.

Our Vision

Our vision is a community that recognizes the value of the American Mustang as a viable, wild species deserving protection, particularly on public lands, to ensure the sustainability of a healthy, genetically-diverse population.

Why We Are Different

We are different than many wild horse groups in that our program is an economically viable, business-based model that will help meet community needs to financially support our efforts to change the plight of the wild horses. We are bringing community officials, organizations, schools and businesses together to accomplish this. We will build a sustainable program not dependent upon government subsidies. The sustainability of our program will stem from educational opportunities, tourism and recreation. In particular, we are educating young people - tomorrow's decision makers and horse lovers. We aim to create an economic model of blending horse enthusiasts, outdoor adventurists, and school children to support a mustang training and awareness program that is an alternative to current BLM holding facilities and compliment their Adopt-a-Horse Program. Once our blueprint is established, it can be replicated in other communities.

To accomplish these goals, the American Mustang Foundation (AMF) will work with government agencies and local, national and international organizations to:
